The good old days – 4 –

From January 1997 all powered hi-fi must carry a CE mark. Anything without is illegal, although speakers are exempt. Prices will rise because manufacturers have to cover the costs of testing which run into tens of thousands of pounds. It is an expensive piece of bureaucracy as it is neither a mark of safety nor quality. Different interpretations are applied in EU countries. The conclusion is that CE stands for Confusion Everywhere. (What Hi-Fi Jan 1997)
