MONTREAL — A confidential federal memo suggests Canada’s last fully functional asbestos mine is about to die, raising the prospect the controversial industry might just disappear on its own.

The Natural Resources Canada memorandum, released under the Access to Information Act, estimates that the life of Quebec’s Lac d’amiante du Canada will end in early 2012. Read more at montreal.ctv.ca

AMPANG JAYA: No matter how delicious the food is at your favourite eatery, if the environment is unclean, stay away from the outlet.

This advice came from the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) environmental health officer Ghazali Ab Wahab who shut down three dirty eateries at Kg Tasek Permai yesterday.

“If you are health conscious, don’t patronise dirty outlets even if they provide your favourite meals,” he said.

Another Foxconn worker falls from a great height

Manufacturing giant Foxconn still seems unable to hang on to its workers, as reports emerge of yet another employee having fallen to his death from one of the Taiwan-based outfit’s factory.

The 21 year-old apparently jumped to his death from the sixth floor of the factory dormitory in Shenzhen, China, to become the latest in a long line of suicides at the plant.

Cooks smoking in the kitchen, a patron smoking outdoors at an ice cream parlor and customers lighting up in bars were among the incidents that prompted 17 complaints to the Washtenaw County Health Department in the first year of Michigan’s workplace smoking ban.

During the same time period, the Health Department found that 12 restaurants or bars violated the ban. The department resolved the violations by talking to owners and managers about the ban, asking them to post signs and remove ashtrays where smoking had occurred and educate employees about enforcement.

A DEAD mouse stuck in grease and mouse droppings in food have resulted in a £2,600 fine for a Bourne takeaway.

Owners of the Curry Palace in North Street appeared at Grantham Magistrates’ Court and they were found guilty of two breaches of food safety.

The event on Southsea Common marked Action Mesothelioma Day yesterday – a day intended to raise awareness about the cancer and how the deadly dust is still around today.
